I received the following message from Megan H. this week - and it's perfect for a repost here. :) Pushups are one of the toughest exercises to perform PERFECTLY. And it takes a lot of practice to do them correctly. But it's REALLY important to have proper form, so read-on if you think your pushups could use a makeover. ;) She asked:
"So I'm on [Series] 1.0 and I have to do modified pushups on my knees and I'm so weak that sometimes my form looks like I'm doing the worm. Should I do something else during that interval because my form is so terrible or should I just keep trying??"
My answer? JUST KEEP TRYING. There is NO SHAME in modifying. I do it all the time! Here's how to make the most of your efforts without injury...
Continue to modify (on your knees).
Shorten your range of motion (lower your chest only halfway, maybe even just a couple inches!, towards the floor).
If you do these 2 simple tips above, you'll give your body the ability to BUILD UP STRENGTH to be able to lower yourself closer to the floor and press up without 'worming' (even though the worm is fun & all! ;) We don't want it in your pushups!). If you allow your chest (and core, by the way) to build up strength, you'll eventually be able to lower your chest closer to the floor and maybe even pop up to your toes for a few non-modified pushups in the future. But regardless, if you keep proper form and push yourself... the time you're putting in counts! Modified or not, if you feel you're working hard, you ARE and it matters.
Definitely don't skip the exercise! Just modify!
Check out some of the videos HERE to see how to modify (and advance!) with proper form.
